The Toxicant-wildlife Complex

چکیده

Familiar vertebrate wildlife comprise less than five per cent of the animal kingdom. A major proportion of the other thousands of non-insect species are aquatic and will be increasingly exposed to a wide variety of manmade and natural chemicals. Effective management of this toxicant—wildlife complex demands general and simple means for the prediction and estimation of effects and hazards. Direct, non-food exposure to toxicants is much more extensive than was expected and the bioconcentration of persistent compounds may be approximated by their lipid—water partition coefficients. Simple measures of distribution into soil organic matter and biota, environmental degradation, and toxicity then provide an estimate of relative hazard, extended and verified by both direct measurement and comparison of metabolites excreted by aquatic species and by predictive in vitro simulation of primary metabolism. These generalizations suggest that bioconcentration of stable substances usually will depend upon the fat content of individuals, may not be strongly affected by metabolism, will not inevitably lead to 'biomagnification', and will become increasingly predictive.

Protective Effect of Berberis integerrima Fruit Extract on Carbon-Tetrachloride Induced Hepatotoxicity in Rats

Background & Objective: Hepatoprotective effect of antioxidants such as flavnoids has been demonstrated. The aim of the present study was to assess the hepatoprotective effect of the methanolic extract of Berberis integerrima fruit (MEBIF) on carbon-tetrachloride (CCL4) induced hepatotoxicity in rats. Materials & Methods: Forty male rats were divided into 5 groups as follows: 1) normal, 2) toxi...

Derivation of wildlife values for mercury.

A procedure has been developed to estimate surface water concentrations of toxicants ("wildlife values") that will protect the viability of wildlife populations associated with aquatic resources. This procedure was designed primarily to protect piscivorous birds and mammals from compounds that bioaccumulate in fish and was used in the Great Lakes Water Quality Initiative (GLI) to calculate wild...

Determination of diazinon LC50 in grass carp (Cetenopharyngodon idella) and the effect of sublethal concentration of toxin on some hematological and biochemical indices

Toxicity of the organophosphate, diazinon was studied in grass carp (Cetenopharyngodon idella) weighing 5±1.0g, under static water quality condition at 16°C. Also, some hematological and biochemical variables of fish weighing 50±5.0g were studied 12 hours post-exposing fish to the toxicant at sublethal concentration of 5.6mg/L at 16°C. Values of 18.19, 17.21, 16.68, and 15...
